about

lyrics

Every time I get close to you
We talk and then you have to go
Guess I'll see you in the summertime
I won't lose my mind

We can catch up on the old times
Old friends I never cared to know
And it doesn't matter anyway
You're leaving any day
And it adds up to zero

Adds up to zero
Adds up to zero again
Adds up to zero again

You were talking with your eyes closed
Smiling like you knew just what to do
We were driving in the blue car
Down the country roads
Miles away from your school
We were talking like we had all day
We never watched the minute hand go around
And it's my fault
You're gone again

All adds up to zero
Adds back up to zero again
All adds up to zero again

And I don't know why I'll see you
Only ends in memories
God only knows why I need you
Guess I didn't want to lose sight

All adds up to zero
Adds back up to zero again
All adds up to zero again

from I'll Repay You: A Benefit for John Fackler - featuring the songs of John Fackler and Jettison, released May 20, 2016
Written by John Fackler, whose own version does not make him cry a little during the second verse.

The Dead Ven version does make him cry, but just a little, during the second verse. Reportedly.

This song was always a country song in hiding. John grew up punk, then discovered Dylan and Hank. This song is a 20 year old's attempt at something like that. The Jettison version is still a little country. You know, that "No Depression" sound or whatever.

But Dead Ven's version...

It blew John's mind.

Listen to that fiddle.

Listen to this man's voice. Man.

Ven Smith - guitar and vocals
Katie Benyo - fiddle
John Velghe - 12-string guitar and harmonica
